Twitter just announced free access to the Twitter API will end on February 9, with unannounced pricing or usage details, effectively killing every free fun and useful thing ever built with it: bots, games, mashups, visualizations, research projects, autoposters, autoblockers, deleters, and so much more. twitter.com/twitterdev/status/

Chaosnet: The #Lisp Machine network protocol that was beat by TCP/IP

"The only really visible remnant of #Chaosnet is the CH DNS class. There’s something about that fact that I find strangely fascinating. The CH class is a vestigial ghost of an alternative network protocol in a world that has long since settled on TCP/IP. It’s exciting, at least to me, to know that the last traces of Chaosnet still lurk out there in the infrastructure of our networked society. The CH DNS class is a fun artifact of digital archaeology. But it’s also a living reminder that the internet was not born fully formed, that TCP/IP is not the only way to connect computers to each other, and that “the internet” is far from the coolest name we could have had for our global communication system."

Do you know this species? Greta oto is a species of brush-footed #butterfly and member of the subfamily Danainae, tribe Ithomiini, and subtribe Godyridina. It is known by the common name glass wing butterfly for its transparent wings, which allow it to camouflage without extensive coloration. In Spanish it's espejitos, meaning "little mirrors" because of its transparent wings. #Photographer unknown

➡️ Arctic (2nd lowest on record for date) + Antarctic (lowest on record for date)

"Security questions" are not multi-factor authentication (MFA). They are security theatre.

Yesterday I took apart a pair of secateurs, removed the rust, cleaned them, oiled them, and sharpened the blades.

My dad's stereo comes with a circuit diagram in a little pouch when you open it, so you can more easily identify and replace components.

Clothing is *supposed* to come apart at the seams, because seams can be restitched with almost no loss of quality, unlike a fabric tear that needs to be patched.

Having items that are actively hostile to repair is a very, very modern trend.

Just out - a new systematic review of 42 studies on #learning effects of the #COVID19 #pandemic covering 15 countries by Bastian A. Betthäuser, @per and Anders Bach-Mortensen.

Substantial overall learning deficit which persists over time. Deficits are large for children from low SES and are larger in #math than in #reading, and in middle-income countries relative to high-income countries.
