You didn’t notice a block of #mastodon instances go dark yesterday with the outage of a major European backbone host provider (OVH) because the #fediverse is so distributed and decentralized. But if you’ve got a flight in the USA today then you know exactly what happens when a centralized software service goes down. #FAA

#FAA has shut down ALL #flights in #USA & possibly #Canada & #Mexico (not sure, but they said #NorthAmerica so...) due to a system outage.

UPDATE for 9am EST: Systems are apparently coming back up and some flights will resume.

I wrote a post about how to set up basic Mastodon monitoring with Grafana and Prometheus, starting from scratch.

Many thanks to @nova @dma @IPngNetworks who provide lots more info and inspiration for this, you find links in my post.

Just throwing this out there, as unlikely as it probably is: Does anyone have any issues of MacWeek from late 1993? I need a scan of the November 29th issue, sadly it’s not on the Internet Archive.

“If I had a dollar for every time a Canadian flight crew ran out of fuel partly thanks to their own errors and then made an amazing gliding landing, I would have two dollars. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it’s happened twice.” - /u/Xi_Highping on reddit

Everyone enjoys a good happy-ending aviation incident report, right? This one has some human factors stuff in it too.

Twitter suspension of the DC transit system account may well have been an unintended goof, or a software issue, but it's one more reason to stress how important it is for public agencies not to rely on the Musk-controlled, highly centralized system. Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them.

Via @Streetsblog, read article linked below.

I’m going to read a (possibly fiction) book - but prefer to read something someone else is also reading…. So … any suggestions?

VLAN article finished. 🎉
Delightful 18 minutes of explaining VLANs in general, on Netgear switches, on OPNsense and on OpenWRT. And a bit about my "implementing VLANs" day.
