Things I had success doing when my city was spending zero dollars on bike infrastructure:
1. Creating & printing a bike map
2. Removing "No Bikes" signs
3. Installing public bike racks
4. Organizing cyclists
5. Planning bike lanes-- some got included in long-term plans
6. Convincing the city to ask the DOT for a "complete streets" approach on a state road
7. Putting "Complete Streets" in long term plans.
Tips are shared here:

Got a hypothetical question for #physics scholars and / or #scifi enthusiasts:
The characters in "Interstellar" discuss managing time dilation which makes 1 hour gravity affected time equivalent to 2 years of reference time. (that's a 1 : 17532 ratio!)
What is the gravitational field strength needed to cause such a time dilation ratio?
What would be the mechanical effects of such gravitational acceleration?
I attempted to make a calculation but the numbers made spreadsheet throw a conrod.
Hi there, #Fediverse. I'm giving people until January 1 to talk me out of organizing a forum for Mastodon instance moderators. Here's the basic idea so far: https://toot.cat/@StephanieZvan/109553303241961412 Hosting hasn't been settled.
Who am I to think I can do something like this?
- I've been helping organizations write and enforce codes of conduct for the last decade.
- Yes, I've been harassed for it, and I have resources for coping.
- My focus is social, not technical.
- I like teaching, but I don't coddle nonsense and misdirection.
- I know and respect that people with the most insight into moderation will have a wide variety of preferences for receiving credit for those insights.
I'm happy to answer questions. People who take that as an opportunity to ask insincere questions often wish they hadn't.
The LockBit ransomware gang has released a free decryptor for the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), saying one of its members violated rules by attacking the healthcare organization.
Hey, you - yes you, the non-cybersecurity person who’s following me on the ‘Don because of social justice or geekdom or being very bored - have you considered attending or submitting a talk to a local hacker conference?
You don’t have to be a cybersecurity expert or professional to do it. There are often talks on everything from technology ethics to radio hobbies, electronics projects to lock picking and criminal psychology. Hackers encompass a huge and cool nerdy space of hobbies and tangential interests from the philosophical to counter culture. We want to learn about lots of stuff related to why people do intriguing or bad things with technology.
Check out your local or regional community BSides here: http://www.securitybsides.com/w/page/12194156/FrontPage - they’re free or cheap and a lot of fun. You don’t have to be a Mr Robot hacker.
Trying for more self-control in the new year? 🎆Here's what psychological research has to say:
- Want to get fit? Start by walking around the block, not running 5 miles. Achieve just enough to stay motivated
- Instead of cutting ALL carbs or sugar out of your diet, give up just one indulgence per day
- Realize that little acts of self-control in one area will improve your self-control in other areas
@patrickcmiller hear, hear!
As a shameless self-plug, here’s a webinar I ran in November for the folks at the IEEE and IoTSec Australia on all things cyber insurance.
My remarks above are based in large part on what our wonderful panel had to say.

@rysiek I have a goal to move my internet habits back about 20 years. I'm gonna build a home page with a list of links of things I think are cool and worth looking at on a regular basis.
Maybe even put up a blinking "under construction" sign
