The owner of Twitter has now made life on the West Coast of the United States less safe. #EmergencyAlerts #preparedness

@twitter is now limiting automated tweets and as a result, this account can no longer post all #Tsunami Warnings, Advisories, Watches, and Information Statements as they are issued. We will make every effort to continue manual posts 🧵(1/5)

I feel like it's worth reminding people that Citizens United, during which Justice Thomas, we have learned, was very obviously on the take, was a 5-4 vote.

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

I am sorry to report that the last two publications recognizable as computer magazines in the classic sense have abandoned print. (You probably didn’t notice unless you were a subscriber.) I was moved to write a eulogy for the whole era. technologizer.com/2023/04/15/t

A good example: european-union.europa.eu/index A non-intrusive bar at the bottom with a clear choice. That doesn't block using the site (until you agree, the site treats you as if you have not agreed. Simple). With a link to clearly written explanation.

TBH, this seems worse than having the road blocked by climate activists for a few minutes.

So one of the world's worst botnets was created to gain an advantage in Minecraft and now a massive U.S. military leak reportedly happened cause someone wanted to show off to his Discord buddies.

Just incredible

When I was about ten, I noticed an infrared sensor in our VCR and became convinced that it was a hidden camera that my parents were using to spy on me.

I wasn’t a bad kid so I wasn’t worried, but I convinced myself that if I sang and danced for the camera, my parents would FINALLY see my talent and help me get on Star Search.

For the next month, I did super weird performances in front of that VCR until I finally acknowledged that they hadn’t provided any feedback on my skillz, at which point I determined that the only logical conclusion was that the camera wasn’t working, so I…

DISMANTLED THE VCR to examine the camera.

Once everything was opened up and pulled apart, I realized I had no idea what I was looking at so I just screwed everything back together with a bunch of loose, rattling parts inside.

About a week later, I remember watching my dad trying to play a VHS tape to no avail and silently thinking “this is YOUR fault for not seeing my full POTENTIAL, daaaaad!”

Here's an amazing story about an ingenious man who's using cheap hardware and free software to try to identify an elusive orchid pollinator:

Even if you took away the waves, the ocean surface would not be flat.  That’s partly because Earth’s gravity varies across the surface, pulling water around and creating huge lumps and holes up to 100m high/deep. But then temperature, salinity, atmospheric pressure and currents add extra dynamic bumps on top of this of a few tens of cm.  Tracking these lets us measure ocean currents from satellites, which is an astonishing feat.
