Today I learned ↓

The word "Dashboard" comes from the board on the front of a horse carriage which prevents mud from kicking up on the passengers as the horses are "dashing" through the dirt.

Haystack Rock Blue Hour

Haystack Rock is the dominate rock feature on Oregon's Canon Beach just south of Astoria Oregon.
This beach is a true gem. It is all that much nicer when you have a beautiful sunset fading into the blue hour. The beach is wide and the ocean is shallow at this point, so the waves roll out for a good distance leaving a beautiful reflective surface for the setting sun. Good to see media attention about Mastodon’s 10 million accounts!

This was a nice article by @therealjimlove.

But to me, the bigger news is that IT World Canada runs their own Mastodon server at technews.social. Good to see tech media paving the way with best practices!

The Docker drama clearly illustrates the fundamental problem with a server-centric for-profit internet infrastructure.

Again, @molly0xfff nails it:

"Faced with the choice between the more communal, cooperative choice and the self-serving, every-man-for-himself choice destined to end in a bank run, it should be no surprise which option [the venture capitalists] picked. As the Titanic sank, they were the ones pushing people out of the lifeboats."

when I was 15 years old, I got a summer job at the first ISP launched in the far north of canada. i worked in the hardware servicing and deployment area, and did tech support with clients over the phone

for weeks I was enamoured with a massive #VisualBasic box that sat on the shelf. it had to weigh 10+ lbs, and was loaded with manuals. no one seemed to care, so I borrowed a few of the manuals and started reading them over lunch.

my boss must have noticed, and asked me if I was interested in learning how to program. for the next two months he spent weeknights teaching me how to code after the staff went home.

i spent the entire summer of 1995 building a photo library/database tool just for kicks. after that, a visual TCP/IP based chat program called Smalltima Online. 😅

that summer gave me the conceptual foundation for building user-driven experiences a decade later. thank you jeff🙏

i picked up this chonker a couple of years ago just for the memories. 🥰

LB: So let me get this straight. Cropped screenshots on Google Pixel phones have been leaking uncropped data for years because:

- Android changed opening files with the "w" mode to NOT truncate, breaking decades of existing convention retroactively, it was noticed and reported 2 years ago, and it took this long to fix.
- The authors of the Markup tool didn't follow the standard POSIX safe overwrite process where you *always* write out a new file first and then rename it over the old one, instead of overwriting in place.

WTAF. The first issue alone quite likely is a major security issue for many apps beyond Markup. The second one is just bad code. Combined we get this ridiculous situation.

Now I'm just glad I use LineageOS with only some GApps, not the entire Pixel Google bloat package.
