This is the best way to respond to mean comments online.

First, buy a harp. Second, program strings to correspond to letters. Third, type your comments on the harp.

All tech people should be forced to test their fancy new software on 5-year-old hardware with a rural internet connection.

fyi, since many people don't know this exists:
Almost all computer screens made in the last decade support DDC/CI. (The Display Data Channel Command Interface).
You can use it to control stuff like the backlight brightness without fiddling with the awful screen buttons and OSD.

On Linux once you load the ddcci kernel module the screens appear in /sys/class/backlights and can be controlled like a laptop screen.

I made a tool for exploring JSON APIs interactively!

It's been invaluable to me for figuring out how #ActivityPub works. It's surprisingly satisfying to just click around, pretending this was some sort of client! :D

I encourage you to paste the URL to your own #Fediverse profile into the input box, and see how far you can get!

For every meeting, you need a designated buddy who is also in the meeting that you can message to vent about the meeting.

Not what I'd call a "blockbuster", but interesting if you're into #DNSSEC and how to protect keys, here for the root zone.

To sum up where the Fediverse is right now:

2. The @w3c backs it
3. @fsf backs it
4. @eff backs it
5. Twitter Co-Founders @ev and @biz back it
7. Web browsers like @mozilla and @Vivaldi back it
8. Prominent 3rd party client devs like @paul backs it
9. @gruber and @davew back it
10. @georgetakei backs it

Am I missing anyone?

Oh yeah, YOU back it!

A few months ago, we warned that malevolent people were buying Google ads leading people to fake #GIMP websites to trick them into downloading malware.
Apparently this is still continuing to this day (as were reported to us). Google is still not blocking these fake ads despite the many reports and articles which happened for months now. 😓

Be careful and always make sure where you download your software from. Also the GIMP project doesn't buy ads!

The carbon footprint of NFTs on Ethereum wasn’t looking great before The Merge, but it was nothing compared to on-chain Bitcoin NFTs

Yesterday Bitcoin mining company Luxor mined the largest block ever, containing almost exactly 4MB of data. Only 63 transactions could fit into the block, as the NFT used up the rest of the available space

The carbon footprint: ~888 metric tons of CO2, equivalent to the per passenger carbon footprint of taking a flight from New York to Tokyo and back - 466 times

@atomicpoet technical question, if you have an independent instance, and you are followed by (say) 10,000 followers all on independent instances, will your instance need to do 10,000 network connect/pushes for everything you post?

from the time that we reported a scam app impersonating Brave and stealing cryptocurrency, it took 16 days and escalation to multiple Google employees for Google Play to take it down. the app had been up since Dec 19(!) and had over 1k users :(. community.brave.com/t/brave-wa

So, is it appropriate to recreate my twitter accounts AND history on a self hosted instance (including back dating postings / QTs etc)?

Twitter just announced free access to the Twitter API will end on February 9, with unannounced pricing or usage details, effectively killing every free fun and useful thing ever built with it: bots, games, mashups, visualizations, research projects, autoposters, autoblockers, deleters, and so much more. twitter.com/twitterdev/status/
