So, don't tell anybody, but we're going to announce Palm Pilot emulation in the browser at Internet Archive in the next week or so. I've still got to get descriptions in for the hundreds of apps that are uploaded, and add a few more classics. But if you want to help with that, or just let me know how it's going, ping me here.
But don't tell anybody! It's a secret!
For when you quickly want to inspect the contents of a binary file, I’ve created this web-based viewer: https://iamkate.com/code/binary-file-viewer/
The file is processed in your browser and doesn’t leave your computer. You can verify this as the 5KB of source code isn’t minified: https://iamkate.com/code/binary-file-viewer/page.js
To avoid the browser being slowed down by potentially millions of DOM elements, only the portions of the file currently visible in the viewport are rendered.
Would I post this to the bird site? Absolutely not. My mentions would become a trash fire the moment I even implied existence of my boobs.
When measured by energy required to move people around, it's obvious that the real game changer in the EV field is not a Tesla, or even a car (although microcars come closer). The revolution here is the #ebike.
It's cheaper, safer, more efficient, more fun and it makes users healthier and happier. Although it also shares the problem of sustainability for battery production, the scale of this issue for ebikes is drastically reduced (close to 100x)
And the charging infrastructure already exists.
The summer of '77 is when I worked with the #UNIX group at #BellLabs. Ritchie and Kernighan were working on their famous C book. I present Draft Version 1: #ComputerHistory
☄️Asteroid impact predicted with stunning accuracy☄️
On Nov 18, the Catalina Sky Survey detected an asteroid on collision course with Earth.
Although the 1m rock was harmless, it triggered the test of an automated system designed to warn humanity of a more dangerous impact.
Within hours astronomers calculated that it would hit southern Ontario on Nov. 19 at 3:27 am EST.
At the predicted time, people across the region saw the bright trail as it blazed across the sky.

If you're interested in the #fediverse and #ActivityPub then I suspect you'll want to hear about Solid (https://solidproject.org/)
It's the project Sir Tim Berners-Lee is working on. You might know him as the created of the World Wide Web.
Solid is a project that hopes to separate user data from the app that uses it.
A person would store their data in a "pod" and give/revoke access to that data to/from the app.
This means user/account data is very portable! More so even than Mastodon.

Prompted by something that just hopped through my timeline, I got reminded of a project well suited for my next #projects post 😊
My partner collects Funkopop figurines. So for his birthday last year, I sat down in #blender, somehow managed to model him as a Funkopop figure, printed the model on my resin printer, glued, sanded, primed, painted it, created & printed a box & put everything together into a final shape worthy of a present. He loved it 😊
Still owe him a Gina figurine though 😅

Annual #introduction #ComputerHistory
I'm a retired (3rd time) techie with an incredibly lucky career and family.
I'm most famous as being employee number 8 of #SunMicrosystems, and I got to work with the Bell Labs #UNIX team for a summer during the birth of V7 #UNIX.
My Silicon Valley career started with #Amdahl in 1978, followed by Sun for 12 years. I've since founded 4 startups (see profile).
I toot about #ComputerHistory; I've been there for much of it.
