@shantini word of warning for side channel chats when doing online meetings (which, as you say - are essential):
When either of you go to share your screen with the huge meeting including your boss… [ stares into distance, reliving the trauma … ]

Not what I'd call a "blockbuster", but interesting if you're into #DNSSEC and how to protect keys, here for the root zone.

A few months ago, we warned that malevolent people were buying Google ads leading people to fake #GIMP websites to trick them into downloading malware.
Apparently this is still continuing to this day (as were reported to us). Google is still not blocking these fake ads despite the many reports and articles which happened for months now. 😓

Be careful and always make sure where you download your software from. Also the GIMP project doesn't buy ads!

The carbon footprint of NFTs on Ethereum wasn’t looking great before The Merge, but it was nothing compared to on-chain Bitcoin NFTs

Yesterday Bitcoin mining company Luxor mined the largest block ever, containing almost exactly 4MB of data. Only 63 transactions could fit into the block, as the NFT used up the rest of the available space

The carbon footprint: ~888 metric tons of CO2, equivalent to the per passenger carbon footprint of taking a flight from New York to Tokyo and back - 466 times

@atomicpoet technical question, if you have an independent instance, and you are followed by (say) 10,000 followers all on independent instances, will your instance need to do 10,000 network connect/pushes for everything you post?

So, is it appropriate to recreate my twitter accounts AND history on a self hosted instance (including back dating postings / QTs etc)?

Twitter just announced free access to the Twitter API will end on February 9, with unannounced pricing or usage details, effectively killing every free fun and useful thing ever built with it: bots, games, mashups, visualizations, research projects, autoposters, autoblockers, deleters, and so much more. twitter.com/twitterdev/status/

Chaosnet: The #Lisp Machine network protocol that was beat by TCP/IP

"The only really visible remnant of #Chaosnet is the CH DNS class. There’s something about that fact that I find strangely fascinating. The CH class is a vestigial ghost of an alternative network protocol in a world that has long since settled on TCP/IP. It’s exciting, at least to me, to know that the last traces of Chaosnet still lurk out there in the infrastructure of our networked society. The CH DNS class is a fun artifact of digital archaeology. But it’s also a living reminder that the internet was not born fully formed, that TCP/IP is not the only way to connect computers to each other, and that “the internet” is far from the coolest name we could have had for our global communication system."

Do you know this species? Greta oto is a species of brush-footed #butterfly and member of the subfamily Danainae, tribe Ithomiini, and subtribe Godyridina. It is known by the common name glass wing butterfly for its transparent wings, which allow it to camouflage without extensive coloration. In Spanish it's espejitos, meaning "little mirrors" because of its transparent wings. #Photographer unknown
