Okay, I got my shit together and blogged about this thing.

I want a fridge that won't join a botnet

> I could put such devices on a special VLAN, or behind a Pi Hole, but 99% of people can’t. Plus, it’s work. Plus, most importantly, you can bet that “smart” devices will start coming with SIM cards and 4g/5g modems very soon — cars already do. Why does my fridge need Internet connectivity in the first place?

New on #FOSSAcademic: my first post about the Social Web Working Group, the group that gave us #ActivityPub (among many other things). I've read *all* their meeting minutes and am sharing notes on them in a series of posts:

Comments welcome! Responses to this post will appear as comments on the blog unless you set them to "Followers Only" or DM. CWs will work.

U.S. airline accidentally exposes TSA No Fly List on unsecured server: the discoverer blogged about how she used Shodan to find the exposed server, AWS credentials, and S3 buckets dailydot.com/debug/no-fly-list

Have a picture of a waterwheel turning, covered with thick ice.

(Fulenbach, January 20, 2023. It's cold and Small Child forced me to go and see this last night after dark.)

@ijk64 @fluffy @owen @mcc In some systems, one is simply a simlink to the other.

Less is, in fact, more.

I am very sorry.

I wonder how hard it would be to setup a shim API that sits in front of Activity Pub API’s to make it look like the basic Twitter API?
Then *all* the dead twitter clients would just need to switch the hostname they connect to, and they would instantly become useful again. 😜

@fluffy @mhoye @owen @mcc more people use less because less does more than more, or more does less than less, more or less.

It’s very scary to think we are actually entering WWIII but all notional belligerents trying to technical their way out of having to declare it (and rightly so).

So hear we are in 2023:
Europe is wanting to send tanks to aide Ukraine’s defence but Germany is refusing to send Leopard tanks to the Russian front…

@gdbassett I will dig up photo - but it might be available at our local museum “library” - I remember borrowing it out with a bunch of other items for a primary school lesson (parents collected them). I’m hoping I took a photo with a scale in, like a banana :-)
It was pretty scary when we found it in our downstairs shower! (Old high set house on stumps)

I wrote a uBlock rule to fix the new Wikipedia theme.

To me it felt like the text was kinda floating in the void, not anchored to anything (especially once you're scrolled down the page), so I added a vertical rule between the sidebar and the content:

wikipedia.org##.mw-table-of-contents-container:style(border-right: 1px solid; border-image: linear-gradient(to bottom, white 0%, #a2a9b1 10em) 1;)

@gdbassett wait - I think we have found one bigger (circa 1981) - I don’t have the weight, but we made a cast of it

Hello from the future (aka Asia). It's nice here. Well, when it isn't raining.

We‘ve seen a lot of dumb climate change denial campaigns by Steve Milloy in the last decades, but this is perhaps the dumbest. How stupid does he think people are? Who pays him for this embarrassing stuff?
